Euro funding may be denied for school founded by Polish radio priest
Sep. 11, 2007 (CWNews.com) - An official of the European Union has said that a Polish university founded by the controversial Father Tadeusz Rydzyk may not be eligible to receive an anticipated €15.3 million in funding.
Danuta Huebner, the European Union commissioner for regional policy, said that the money designated for the school's physics department could be withheld if the university does not demonstrate that its policies are in line with European values on questions such as discrimination on the basis of religion, race, sex, and sexual orientation. A final decision should be made this week. Father Rydzyk, the founder and director of Radio Maryja, has become a lightning-rod for criticism because of his outspoken views.
In related news, the Los Angeles-based Simon Wiesenthal Center appealed to the EU to withhold the funding because of the anti-Semitic views Father Rydzyk is said to have expressed.
